Setting a Stop Limit With Poker

Poker can be a very overwhelming and addictive game that can overcome our lives when it comes down to being at the poker table. How many times have you gone to play poker for "a couple hours" and it turned into twelve hours. If you haven't ran into that problem then good for you. For those of us who have, it is important to set a stop limit. Even more important is actually stopping when it comes time to stop.
There are many different ways to set a stop limit. It really just depends on your goals and what is going on in your life. If you decide you only want to play for a certain amount of time then you should set your stop limit based on a time. If time is not so much of an issue for you then you may want to set your stop limit based on money that you lose or win. You could stop when you get up to a certain point or if you get down to a certain point.
Setting a Stop Limit Depends on your Goals
Different people with different goals are going to have different stop limits for different reasons. Take a professional poker player for example. A pro is going to obviously need to put many more hours into poker then someone who plays for fun or even as a part time job. The professional poker players have poker as one of their top priorities. It has to be because poker pays the bills and puts food on the table. Without poker they cannot pay for the things they need.
Most poker players are not professionals, but a lot of them still play a lot of poker. It is easy to get too involved with poker and let it take over the rest of your life. Just walk into a poker room and see how many of the guys at the tables are wearing wedding rings. Of course, there are plenty that are married; but it is sure that they have stop limits to balance out there life and make sure they are not letting poker take over the rest of their life.
Without balance and other things in your life, poker will be nothing but a burden. Setting stop limits are the first part of making sure that poker is used as a tool that helps you with your life and doesn't destroy it. It is really just like anything else. Too much of anything is usually not a very good thing. Balance is very important and setting stop limits will insure that you have it all under control.
Setting Stop Limits alone is not enough
Setting stop limits is only the start of it all. The hardest part is not setting the stop limit; it is actually following it. Playing one more hand will only cause you to play even more. Before you decide to play "one more hand" stop and ask yourself if you are really just going to play one more hand. The key to setting stop limits is to actually stop when you get to that point. It is not hard if you just do it. Set the limit and know when it is coming. Be ready and content with stopping when the time comes to stop. If it helps, make your one more hand before the limit is up. It all comes down to self discipline.
